My kids have been talking about this site called Groupon to get up to the minute deals as a group. Has anyone tried advertising their business on this site? How does it work?

A friend of mine owns a restaurant in MD and he has used it a couple of times. Last time he did it he offered his signature 16oz prime rib dinner for 2 w/ a bottle of good wine for $50. He emailed his entire customer database and sold hundreds of groupons in one day. Acquired a lot of new customers too. Groupon seems to work great for some businesses.

Visit the site and it explains everything. Cool concept and seems to work grea.

Many of my co-workers use it and love it! We live in such a small area I haven't tried yet but now you've made me curious.

Here's some of mashable's articles on it:

I adore all things Mashable! LOL

Groupon works great for local business. The way it works is Groupon feature different advertiser's product/service on different day, Groupon worked with advertisers to come up with a special discount with predertimined number of coupons to be sold. For example a spa business offer a massage for $20 ($40 value) where at least 30 coupons need to be sold in order for the group to take advantage of this offer. If only 10 coupons were sold after the bid is over, than no one can take advantage of the offer. Most of the time the number of coupons sold exceed the predertermined number allowing the groups to take advantage of the offer.

If you are going to advertise on Groupon, I would also recommend text message marketing to maximize your advertising dollar. When your customers come to your store to redeem coupons they purchased from groupon, you can get your customers subscribed to receive coupons or promotions via text message. Once they subscribed, they get added to the database so that you can market to them later in future simply by sending them more promotional updates via text message.

You can send text message coupons, discount, promotion, alert, announcement, important updates, new product/service launch, last minute sale, deep discount, etc...

Text message marketing allow you to reach the right customer at the right time at the right location with the right information.

Took a look at groupon.com and I'm disappointed. As always Green Bay and our surrounding areas aren't using services like this. :(

Groupon is a sure winner for consumers.

However, for most restaurants and bars, it can be one of the worst ways to advertise. You can find more detailed information about Groupon for bars and restaurants at http://www.barbusinessowner.com/public/Groupon_Promotion_For_Bars.cfm
